Framing guide
A frame can enhance and bring out the beauty in a picture, it can also kill it.
Take your time when choosing a frame. If possible try to choose a frame to complement the picture rather than the room.
Don't let the framer sell you something you don't want, do however, listen to the reasons given for any framing suggestions.
Ask what type and quality of mountboard is going to be used. Standard is adequate for most pictures and posters, however, it will deteriorate faster and where it touches the artwork may, in time, leave a mark. Ask if a barrier board is going to be used. Barrier board separates the picture from the backing board and can be made of mountboard or a special paper. Barrier boards absorb pollutants from the backing board and helps protect the artwork, they are a must for any pictures that you intend to keep for more than a couple of years.
Ask about glass types, see our glass section for more details.
Always ask how long it will take and how much it will cost.
There are many different types of moulding and a few specialist framing terms. If you don't understand something don’t be afraid to ask!
